My friend Brendan went to Japan for three weeks, leaving me in charge of his balcony mini-forest: tomato plants, strawberries, a tiny herbarium, and a collection of indoor plants. The two Japanese Maple trees seemed particularly pleased he’d gone to check out their heritage!
It was a real treat for me because the apartment is in such a fantastic spot. Matcha latte cafés everywhere! I passed a huge line of people queuing at the bakery on his street to make my way to Superhuman wholefoods for a turmeric smoothie. Definitely more my style. Everything you could want or need was just a stone’s throw away, with plenty of spots to escape into nature. The apartment itself was a breeze to care for—cute, small, and low-maintenance. Bonus challenge: the building’s carparks were being cleaned for two days, so I got to practice my valet skills, moving Brendan’s car out and back in without a hitch.
Happy to report that all the plants were thriving when Brendan returned. I even sent him photographic proof that his strawberry plant was gearing up to deliver some fruit in celebration of his homecoming. 🌱🍓
